Local colleges

Local colleges offer courses for anyone 16 and over. They include T levels, apprenticeships, higher education access courses, right through to foundation degrees. There are courses specifically in health and care as well as lots more other opportunities for the range of roles in this sector - think finance, admin, marketing, plumbing plus many more. 

  • Barnsley College: Study programmes in health, science and social care plus apprenticeships in childcare, dental, health and science.
  • Dearne Valley College: Dearne Valley College is a hub for higher skills in health and social care and we are currently developing a health and science laboratory, simulated clinical suite and medical assessment ward and new sector related technologies. You will be able to complete a variety of enrichment programmes and competitions to develop employability and personal development skills.
  • Northern College: Based in Barnsley, this is the only residential college for adults aged 19+ in the North. They will prepare you to re-enter education, gain employment or make a career change through immersive residential learning and specialist support.
Higher education courses 

If you want to train in subjects like medicine, nursing, dentistry, orthoptics, psychology, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, paramedic science, physiotherapy then Sheffield has some of the country's best universities for these topics.

Training 
  • Barnsley care training programme:  If you want a new challenge, love helping others and want to work in care, this could be the perfect chance for you. Our four-week training programme will teach you everything you need to know about working in care. We'll give you all the tools you need to get started. After a few weeks of teaching, you’ll come away with the skills and knowledge you need to start in one of Barnsley’s varied health and care roles.

    From here, we'll link you with local employers to help you find the perfect job for you. 

  • Adult skills training: If you are 19 or older, there's a range of local sessions on offer to help you get the skills you're looking for a new job or volunteer role. This might be everyday numeracy or English or employability skills like applying for jobs and preparing for job interviews. They offer free taster courses and many of the courses don't need entry qualifications.

    • Who are we? We manage the Barnsley Primary Care Network (PCN), which is made up of 32 GP practices, and run the iHEART Barnsley out of hours GP service. We also deliver a number of community healthcare services, such as health and wellbeing coaching, social prescribing and first contact physiotherapy, and directly manage BHF GP practices.

We are a charity providing specialist palliative and end of life care to local people living with a life-limiting illness and those close to them. Our care strives to improve the quality of life for patients and their families by providing pain and symptom relief; practical, emotional, spiritual and social support; counselling and bereavement support services. We do this through our mental health, community, learning disability and wellbeing services across Barnsley, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield. Their Barnsley services are run from sites including Kendray Hospital and New Street Health Centre. We also provide specialist secure mental health (forensic) services for the whole of Yorkshire and Humber. Don't let a location put you off - always check with the people advertising the role if it's not clear. Not all job adverts are as clear as they could be so it always pays to ask.

  • Walking or cycling: Some of the larger organisations offer cycle storage units, showering/changing facilities and cycle to work schemes. 
  • Car: Some of the health and care organisations have car parks. Some of these you will need to pay for and some will be free. All of them should have accessible parking.
  • Bus or train: If you don't drive, or have access to regular lifts, then public transport might be for you. All our hospitals have bus stops outside and GP practices, pharmacies and dentists often have one very near. You can check the latest bus, tram and train timetable routes on the South Yorkshire. Top tip: Add 'hospital' into the search if your job is in a local hospital.
